DIY Non-Toxic Air Freshener

essential oils Feb 27, 2017

Are you someone who avoids perfumes, scented lotions, and air fresheners because the smell is too overwhelming? Or perhaps the fragrance causes an adverse reaction. I used to love scented candles, plug-in air fresheners, scented lotions, and perfumes. Then they started to give me headaches. I’m sure many of you can relate.

I later came to find out that all of these scented items were made of synthetic, toxic chemicals. No wonder I was getting headaches! So, I completely stopped using anything scented with fragrance.

Then, I found essential oils and everything changed. I could make my environment smell nice in a completely natural, safe, and therapeutic way.

I’m currently traveling for a doTERRA leadership conference, and the place I’m staying is a little too generous with the air fresheners. Thankfully, it’s just in the hallways and not in my room. Every time I enter the hallway I have to hold my breath because the smell is so overpowering. Nothing about it smells natural. It has a strong chemical, synthetic characteristic to it.

Instead, I wish more people and public places would use natural options like essential oils. They’re so easy, safe, and affordable.

While I can’t control the air I breathe in public places, I can control the air in my home. Using essential oils to clean and freshen my home helps reduce the toxic burden on my body, so when I’m in public places breathing in less than desirable air, my body can handle it better.

While diffusing oils in your home is a super easy and effective way to cleanse and freshen the air, you can also make your own air freshener, with a couple of simple ingredients.

Check out the recipe below and ditch your toxic air freshener with pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils that smell amazing!

Ingredients:

  • 1 small Mason jar with band
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 5-6 drops of your favorite essential oil
  • Small piece of fabric

Directions:

  1. Put 1/4 cup baking soda into a small jar. Add 5-6 drops of your favorite doTERRA essential oil or blend.
  2. Recommended Essential Oils: Balance, Cassia, Geranium, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon, On Guard, Purify, or Wild Orange. Put piece of fabric on jar and seal with band.
  3. Editor’s Tip: Add some style by drawing a design onto a piece of paper and then securing the design on top of the lid with a strong tape around the edges and poking holes along the pattern. Place jar in an area you would like to keep smelling fresh. This could include: the bathroom, near a garbage can, in your closet, near your dirty clothes, etc. Shake the jar often to activate the fresh scent.
  4. If scent starts to fade, simply add 2-3 drops of essential oil to jar.
