Essential Oils for Gut, Skin, and Adrenals

essential oils Oct 05, 2015

I’ve been using therapeutic grade essential oils for the past couple of years now, and I love them. I use them for skin care, household cleaning, relaxation, and wellness. However, recently, I’ve been reading and researching more on essential oils, their amazing healing benefits, and how to use them properly.

I’ve now started expanding my variety of essential oils and using them more frequently. I’ve definitely noticed an improvement in my mental, emotional, and physical wellness, and I truly believe that therapeutic grade essential oils can offer numerous healing benefits.

Essential oils have been used throughout history for thousands of years, and they were widely used in biblical times and are referenced frequently in the Bible. Pure, unadulterated, therapeutic-grade essential oils are emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and physically healing.

Essential oils are composed of tiny molecules that are absorbed directly into your bloodstream when applied topically. They can also pass through the blood-brain barrier. Any essential oil placed anywhere on the body is transdermal and can reach every part of your body within minutes.

I recently listened to a presentation from Dr. Josh Axe where he discussed the use of essential oils for gut and adrenal health.

Since essential oils are transdermal, they can offer amazing benefits for physical healing including your skin, gut, and adrenals.

We know there’s a very strong gut-skin connection. When your gut isn’t healthy, you may experience reactions on your skin such as acne, eczema, rosacea, etc. The reverse is also true. The things you apply to your skin are absorbed into your bloodstream and can impact other organs in your body. When you’re applying a bunch of chemicals to your skin in the form of personal care products, they can negatively impact your health.

Instead you can replace your skin care with essential oils mixed with other non-toxic ingredients. Two of my favorite oils for skin care are lavender and melaleuca (tea tree oil). Lavender is very calming, soothing, and anti-inflammatory. Melaleuca is antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory. Other essential oils to consider are chamomile, frankincense, and geranium. You can mix these with coconut oil or jojoba oil, or you can add them to your current moisturizer.

Not only will these oils be healing for the skin, but they contain healing properties for the whole body.

NOTE: Be sure to test the essential oil on a small patch of skin before applying to your face or other sensitive area. Some essential oils may cause a reaction on sensitive skin types. It’s best to mix with a carrier oil such as coconut oil before applying to any sensitive areas.

There are also certain essential oils known to benefit the gut and digestion directly. Some of these include:

  • Peppermint – great for abdominal discomfort, indigestion, and intestinal inflammation
  • Ginger – great for intestinal inflammation and motility
  • Frankincense – great for immune system support
  • Chamomile – shown to reduce GI inflammation in small and large intestine

Essential oils can also be used to effectively help manage chronic stress and adrenal fatigue. Some oils that help support the adrenals are:

  • Rosemary
  • Basil
  • Lavender
  • Vetiver

These oils help calm the nervous system and help regulate cortisol.

You can diffuse these oils, add them to an epsom salt bath, apply topically, or some of them you can take internally. For example, you could apply rosemary and basil topically over your adrenals, add a drop of ginger to your water or apply peppermint to your abdomen.

Now before you go out and buy a bunch of essential oils, it’s incredibly important to know the quality of oils you’re buying. Not all oils are created equal and the labeling can be extremely misleading.

In order to receive the benefits of essential oils, you must make sure they are 100% therapeutic grade, unadulterated, and undiluted. If you’re buying oils like frankincense for $10, then you can trust it’s not a therapeutic grade oil because the cost of making the oil is much higher than that.

It’s not worth using oils that have been distilled or diluted with toxic chemicals. Surprisingly, you can actually find oils in retail stores whose labels say things like “100% pure, organic, natural, or therapeutic grade”, when in fact these terms are not legit. The regulations around labeling allow for a lot of flexibility and the definitions of these terms are very loose.
