My Top Documentaries on Health, Consciousness, and Sacred Medicine for 2020

I’ve shared my favorite books that I read this year and my favorite music that I listened to this year. Well, I also did a little TV watching. While I don’t have regular cable TV (is that still a thing?), I do have Netflix, GaiaTV, and Amazon Prime.

And I watched a few shows of all varieties. Below I’m sharing some of my favorite documentaries that will inspire you, open your mind to new possibilities, and perhaps offer a new perspective on things. And I’ll also share some of my favorite shows that I watched just for fun. Because sometimes, you just want to unwind, relax and enjoy, right?!

Top Movies and Documentaries on Health, Consciousness, and Sacred Medicines

Transcendence Season 1 & 2

This series is on GaiaTV which I highly recommend subscribing to! I actually think I watched season 1 in 2018 and season 2 last year, but it’s going on the list because it’s that good. It’s such a great docu-series with experts like Dr. Joe Dispenza, Marie Forleo, Garielle Bernstein, Michael Beckwith, and more. The series covers important topics like food and nutrition, overcoming fear, what is fulfillment, connecting with your true self, emotional healing, sacred medicines, and more. Here’s a brief synopsis.

Dosed

After many years of prescription medications failed her, a suicidal woman turns to underground healers to try and overcome her depression, anxiety, and opioid addiction with illegal psychedelic medicine such as magic mushrooms and iboga.

Adrianne’s first dose of psilocybin mushrooms catapulted her into an unexpected world of healing where plant medicines are redefining our understanding of mental health and addiction.

The Medicine

The Medicine reveals the hidden mysteries of one of nature’s most powerful and controversial healing remedies- Ayahuasca. It is a documentary about Amazonian shamanism, introducing Taita Juanito Guerillmo Chindoy Chindoy, both a teacher and student of the sacred plant medicine. As Ayahuasca gains popularity in the West, the film explores the science as well as the lore behind the plant and why it is used to heal. It follows former NFL Safety, Kerry Rhodes, and actress, AnnaLynne McCord, as they drink with the Taita experiencing Ayahuasca for the first time- in its true tradition.

Humanity faces an unprecedented rise in addiction, insecurity and disease- perhaps the cure does lie within the arms of Mother Nature.

Down to Earth

Actor Zac Efron journeys around the world with wellness expert Darin Olien in a travel show that explores healthy, sustainable ways to live. This is a fantastic series, and I love that a celebrity actor is using his platform to share such an important message of creating health and abundance for humanity and Mother Earth. I also love that this show is on a mainstream network like Netflix. The word is getting out and people are waking up.

Psychedelica

In this ground-breaking original series, experts explore the history and use of psychedelic plants including political ambitions, the perceived shadow side and the proper environment to experience these substances. From the origins of Shamanism to the spiritual expression of modern awakenings, discover the role of sacred medicine as a gateway to expanded consciousness, and its continued influence on humanity.

The Goop Lab

I enjoyed this series because it was fun, entertaining and educational. In The Goop Lab, Gwyneth Paltrow and employees at her wellness and lifestyle company Goop explore not-so-mainstream ideas and concepts around alternative health, breathwork, plant medicine, Wim Hof's cold therapy, female sexuality, anti-aging diets, energy healing, and more.

The Social Dilemma

This riveting documentary takes a deep look inside the addictive, manipulative nature of social media and the impact its having on the health of our minds and ultimately our life. We see how social media is contributing to mental health issues in young kids and teens, and we see how its creating division and polarization among humanity. While there are many benefits to social media, this documentary brings in tech experts and ex-social media executives to evaluate the downside of these massive platforms and what must change in the way social media operates. Discover how social media is intentionally designed to cause addictive behavior to keep you coming back for more.
