Non-Toxic Cleaning with Essential Oils

essential oils Jun 11, 2018

If you’ve ever checked out the ingredients in your all-purpose cleaner or shower cleaner, then you know just how many chemicals they have in them. Because of this and because I’m always looking for better, safer ways to clean, I wanted to share some of the best non-toxic cleaning solutions with you. These are all solutions you can make at home with the help of essential oils.

First up, an essential oil all-purpose cleaner—an inexpensive, non-toxic alternative to commercial cleaners and a great way to get your home smelling fresh and clean. With this, you can use any essential oils you choose, however, I recommend using some of the best essential oils for cleaning, including Lavender, Lemon, Wild Orange, Eucalyptus, doTERRA On Guard, Peppermint, Grapefruit and Purify Cleansing Blend.

This all-purpose cleaner is best for cleaning hard surfaces in the kitchen, bathroom, etc.

Try this one out:

Ingredients:
2 cups water
1 ½ cups vinegar
1 teaspoon all-natural dish soap
10 drops Lemon essential oil
5 drops Melaleuca essential oil
10 drops doTERRA OnGuard

Directions:
1. Combine all ingredients in spray bottle and shake well.
2. Spray where desired.

Next up, mirror and window cleaner (aka glass cleaner). It can be difficult to find an effective glass cleaner that isn’t full of toxins and chemicals, so if you’re looking for a natural alternative, I think you’ll like this one.

For this, I’d recommend using—Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Spearmint or Wild Orange. Regardless of the scent you choose, you’ll be able to easily wipe away fingerprints, water stains, and more.

Try:

Ingredients:
2 cups water
⅓ cup vinegar
⅓ cup rubbing alcohol
10 drops Spearmint essential oil

Directions:
1. Combine in spray bottle and spray where desired.
2. Wipe away with a paper towel for a streak-free finish.

Third up, a tub and shower cleaning gel. I don’t know about you, but for me, cleaning the bathroom was always met with breathing in harsh chemicals while I scrubbed. However, with essential oils, I was able to transform my bathroom cleaning experience.

Try this:

Ingredients:
1 cup vinegar
½ cup all-natural dish soap
10 drops Lemon essential oil

Directions:
1. Combine in squeeze bottle, shake well.
2. Squeeze on desired area, scrub and let sit for 2 hours.
3. Wash away residue.

To go with the tub and shower gel, try this toilet scrub.

Ingredients:
½ cup water
½ baking soda
¼ cup hydrogen peroxide
¼ cup all-natural dish soap
15 drops Eucalyptus essential oil

Directions:
1. Combine in spray bottle and shake well.
2. Spray in toilet and let sit for 2 hours.
3. Scrub and flush.

Next up, an essential oil stove-top cleaner. Stove-tops have the biggest and toughest stains in the kitchen. From splattered spaghetti sauce to leftover grease and caked-on residue, they’re often covered in grime. And this cleaner not only gets rid of stains and grime, but also leaves behind an uplifting scent.

To help you get your stove clean, try:

Ingredients:
¼ cup all-natural dish soap
1 cup baking soda
15 drops Citrus Bliss essential oil

Directions:
1. Combine in small jar and let sit for one hour.
2. Scrub on stove with sponge and let sit.
3. Wipe away with a wet cloth.

And lastly, essential oil carpet refresher. Think about all the dirt and bacteria you track into your home on a daily basis, even if you take your shoes off at the door. With this refresher, your carpets will be clean and make the whole house smell great.

Try:

Ingredients:
1 cup baking soda
25 drops Lemon essential oil

Directions:
1. Combine ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
2. Transfer to a jar with a mesh lid, and let sit for 8 hours.
3. Shake on stale carpet, let sit overnight.
4. Vacuum in the morning.
