Simple Hacks to Create Habits that Stick

We're one month into the new year. How are you feeling? By now, most people who make New Years resolutions have failed. They started off strong, and then the momentum dissolved and they gave up. You may be one of those people. I've been there. It doesn't feel good. You may be feeling overwhelmed and frustrated because you can't seem to stick to the healthy habits you really want to create. Perhaps your internal narrative is highly critical. You're not alone.

Many of us make resolutions each year, only to find that we can't keep them. That's why I don't make New Years resolutions. Haha!! But I do create goals and I do set intentions. And while over the years I've probably failed more times than I've succeeded, by now I know I can create a habit and stick with with it.

And that's what I'm sharing with you today. How to create healthy habits that stick.

  • Get clear on what you want to create. It needs to be specific.
  • Get clear on WHY you want to create this change in your life. Your why needs to be emotional. It's not just about having more more money or losing 15 pounds. What's the motivation underneath that? What will accomplishing that open up for you?
  • Start small: Making small changes is the key to forming healthy habits. When you set goals that are achievable, you are more likely to stick to them.
  • Set realistic yet challenging goals. Aiming too high can be discouraging and set you up for failure. Setting realistic goals will help keep you motivated and on track. You'll feel it in your body. What feels stretchy yet achieveable?
  • Be consistent: Consistency is key. Change doesn’t happen overnight, so be patient and commit to doing whatever new habit it is you’re building on a consistent basis. This is where self-sabotage can creep in and will power is needed for a period of time. Be gentle with yourself. Harsh self-criticism is not helpful.
  • Celebrate success. It’s important to acknowledge your progress. Celebrate the small wins to keep yourself motivated.
  • Get a buddy or a coach: Having an accountability partner, coach, or mentor can make a huge difference in helping you commit to healthy habits. Having someone to keep you on track and support you every step of the way will create a higher likelihood of success.

For me, the key players in creating positive change in my life has been accountability, breathwork, and moving through self-sabotage patterns (more on that later).
