We’ve heard it all, and we know we need to nurture our digestive system in order to experience great health. But this can be really hard and tricky, especially when you experience chronic GI issues and don’t know how to resolve them.
You try different gut-healing diets claiming to heal all your symptoms. But, to your disappointment, they don’t work. You’re still bloated and constipated. Or you’re afraid to go anywhere for fear of not having a bathroom nearby.
Although it’s not appealing, your poop can be a great marker of your health. We all poop – some of us more than others – but nobody likes to talk about it. Most of us don’t even pay attention to it until it becomes a problem.
You may spend a lot of time, energy, and money trying to eat healthy, clean foods, but are you digesting them? Is your gut breaking down and absorbing the nutrients the way it should? We often hear, “you are what you eat”. However, that’s not entirely true. A more accurate statement is, “you are what you digest and absorb”.
The quality of your poop is a direct indication of how well your gut is functioning. If your digestive tract is moving too fast or too slow, that can cause more health issues in the long run.
The quality of your poop is extremely important, so you need to start looking at it when you go. The Bristol Stool Chart is a great guide to determine if your poop consistency is considered healthy. Generally, if your poop is between 1-3, that’s considered constipated. 6-7 is diarrhea. Type 4-5 is ideal.
Everyone should be pooping everyday. Going 1-3 times per day is considered a healthy range. Stool is waste, and it’s one of our body’s ways to detoxify. You need to be getting rid of these toxins daily. If you’re going just a couple times a week, you’re likely constipated. And if you’re going 5 or more times a day, you’ve probably got diarrhea.
How easy is it for you to go number 2? If you have to sit on the toilet and read a novel, that’s not a good sign. A trip to the bathroom should only take a few minutes, and it should be easy. You shouldn’t need to strain and push, which can cause hemorrhoids and other issues. Additionally, you should feel like the evacuation was complete. If you ever feel like there’s something left behind that leaves you feeling uncomfortable, then your poop isn’t healthy.
If you’ve tried cleaning up your diet, and you’re still having gut issues, then you may need to dig further.
